How technology has changed the face of interior design

Technological advancements seem to be multiplying at a lightning speed. The world has practically seen a shift of paradigm as each aspect of life is seeing some impact/involvement of technology and digitalisation. The integration of technology in human life is often understood as being the third industrial revolution that has changed life as we know it. Be it work spaces, or homes, technology is all around us. It has almost become hard to imagine living without gadgets and appliances that have made our lives all the more convenient. Naturally, the involvement of technology has extended to the field of interior design too. Within a few years, the industry has seen an uproar in the demand and innovations, combining interior design with technology transforming the design process and outcome, for both the designers and the consumers.

A simple brick and window home no longer solves the purpose, nor appeals to the millennial clientele, making technology a vital part for interior design that is in line with today’s time. Technological advancements, put to use the right way, can at the base level create a better living experience for consumers and simplify the process for designers. On a larger scale, technology powered interiors in residential and commercial spaces could help the sustainability mission that is not just a passion but a necessity at this point. Interior design has received a boost from technology, allowing it to maximize its potential and scope. Technology powered or “smart” interior design is a trend and a requisite. Smart interior design’s basic aim is to create “intelligent” buildings which are a step up in convenience and functionality.

From a design perspective, there are specific technologies that have helped designers create and work more efficiently than ever, creating futuristic designs. Here’s a look at some technological advancements that are ushering in a wave of transformation, changing the face of the industry.

Building information modeling or BIM is a software that allows for better visualization and collaboration throughout the AEC industry. The software essentially offers 3D imaging and design creation over the cloud technology which allows multiple people who are part of the designing process to work on the design. Since the design has holistic attention right from the beginning, the error rate and the need to make changes constantly goes down by a lot. It gives the option to modify and rectify designs as needed, eventually allowing one to keep up with designated timelines.

One of the most essential features of the BIM is its utilization of physical and functional characteristics of a building in the design process, helping create potent designs. The 3D mapped designs are also better from a business perspective as it allows for designs to be approved by clients along the way, and also gives potential buyers something to go by before they choose to invest.

3D printing itself is not a new technology, but it’s venture into the design and construction industry is fairly recent. 3D printing technology has become a point of interest for consumers and designers alike. The technology essentially uses cartridges made out of different materials to print out the given designs. For interior designers and the buyers, this has helped better visualization of designs through intricate and well composed prototypes that are extremely detailed. It has also helped reduce the production time, making the whole process quicker so haste no longer makes waste.

This eventually means quicker transactions between interior designers and their clients, saving time, effort and money for both parties. It has also opened up a whole other category of materials for designers to utilize. 3D printed materials are a new addition to construction and interior design too. From building materials to furniture, it helps create the most intricate of designs with maximum accuracy, generating exact replicas of the desired design. This also means better creative freedom for designers, allowing them to expand their horizons.

Smart materials are yet another technological asset for interior designers to create futuristic and sustainable interior design. Smart materials entail the basic furnishing and interior design materials that one would use in a space, made better with technology. Be it temperature sensitive color shifting wallpapers, photochromic window glass that alter opacity according to the sunlight pouring in, or thermochromic paint, smart materials can transform a space’s interior. Such materials not only give off an innovative look but maximize the functionality of a space.

Tech powered material and furnishings allow designers to create sensible and sustainable designs.Without actually having to tackle writing, sensors or the whole electronics shebang, smart materials bring a hi tech finish to your space. Such products also help break the monotony in a space by adding to a touch of uniqueness to it. Since they have the ability to transform by themselves they seem different throughout the day or seasons reducing the need to renovate over and over, generating less waste.

Smart furnishing and especially fixtures are becoming a trendy choice. Combining practicality and aesthetic, smart furnishings help create an overall better user experience. Smart furnishing uses technology to amplify the furniture one may normally put into a space. The very core of interior design is to develop a comfortable and convenient living environment, and smart furnishing can help meet that aim. For instance, since gadgets are a huge part of our life, and pretty much stay with us throughout the day, a wireless charging enabled table top to charge smartphones or laptops is a great and tech savvy addition to a space, be it a home or an office.

This would help create fine designs that look and work great, eliminating the need to place charging outlets around a space, while maximizing convenience. Similarly, smart fixtures such as smart lights, that can be controlled and customized through simple applications are a great pick. Functions such as changing the color of the lights or regulating it’s intensity add to the look and practicality of space. They help alter the ambience of a room with the click of a button and give it a unique and fun look without too much of a hassle.

Augmented reality or AR technology is another useful tool for designers to create the right space and give clients the utmost satisfactory experience. While designing a space or picking the right furniture and fixtures for it, knowing exactly how it would work in a room is difficult. This is where augmented reality comes to aid. Many companies have already started utilizing the AR technology for an enhanced consumer experience. What AR technology does is that it allows virtual overlays to a space i.e. to pick the right color, or furniture for a room, one can overlay the chosen products over the live imagery of a space, giving a close to life vision, allowing one to make the right design choices. Since such technology can be used in the simplest of devices such as phones or tablets, it allows remote access for designers to access  a valuable tool with a simple click.

Smart home is a term that almost everyone is hearing nowadays. The demand for home automation is on an ever increasing rise. An overwhelming amount of gadgets centered on the idea of smart homes are being brought into the market. The central idea of smart automation for homes or office spaces is to utilize appliances that can be strung together in a wireless network, enabled by bluetooth, internet or wifi to create centrally controlled space. From lighting, to speakers, to air conditioners, smart automation aims to bring all appliances and fixtures to be controlled by a single screen, maximizing convenience and giving a space the modern touch that it needs.

Being sustainable and ecologically responsible is and must be a priority for both designers and consumers. The world is essentially facing an environmental crisis which would only worsen over time unless necessary changes are made from the base level. While people often identify technological advancements as a prime contributor to this ecological problem, it can instead be utilized to counteract the issues creating a more sustainable and environment friendly space. Through tech powered interior design, controlling consumption and saving energy can be made simpler. Regulating and monitoring consumption is not actually possible nor understandable for many people. However, through sensors of fittings indicating when a person is over consuming something like water or maybe electricity can help one bring it in control. Similarly, motion sensors powered heating or cooling systems turning off by themselves when a person leaves the room or thermal sensor fixed systems generating just the required amount of cooling/heating in a room as per the climate can help reduce emissions, save energy and electricity.

Technology has largely altered lives. From education to work, to everyday life, technology plays a vital role in almost all aspects of our lives. Technological advancements in the arch-interio industry have opened up whole new avenues for designers to create designs that are sustainable, trendy, functional and futuristic. Tech powered interior designs can help create a better experience for designers and consumers alike, developing sustainable and modern spaces with ease.
